Goalkeepers often slip under the radar in the goal-scoring frenzy of world football. “Attack wins matches, defense wins tournament,” is a famous quote of Sir Alex Ferguson, and shot-stoppers are the most formidable custodians of any backline. Similarly, the Indian Super League (ISL) has seen several top-notch goalkeepers ply their trade in the competition over the years, and here’s rating the top-10 of them in the 11 seasons of the competitions thus far.
1. Gurpreet Singh Sandhu – 48 clean sheets

The Bengaluru FC goalkeeper has a commanding presence between the posts and has been the undisputed No. 1 for both club and country in the last decade. At 32, he is still going strong and perhaps has his best years ahead of him.
2. Amrinder Singh – 46 clean sheets

Amrinder Singh has followed Gurpreet toe to toe, with his sharp shot-stopping skills and effective distribution turning out to be an asset for whichever team he has represented in the league, including Odisha FC most recently.
3. Vishal Kaith – 40 clean sheets

Vishal Kaith has emerged as a formidable challenger to the established duopoly of Gurpreet and Amrinder. His performances have been so impressive off late that the Mohun Bagan faithful have been demanding for him to replace Gurpreet in the national team.
4. TP Rehenesh – 37 clean sheets

TP Rehenesh has been one of the more custodians in the ISL. He has frequently produced terrific outings, and has kept a total of 37 clean sheets in 129 games. Rehenesh is now the No. 2 to Phurba Lachenpa at Mumbai City FC.
5. Arindam Bhattacharya – 30 clean sheets

Arindam Bhattacharya’s 30 clean sheets are laudable since they have come in 90 games, reflecting a 33.33% success rate. He has moved from the ISL to the I-League, playing for Inter Kashi now.
6. Subrata Paul – 28 clean sheets

The old guard of Indian football, Subrata Paul – referred to as the Spiderman in the country’s footballing circles, had a pretty good run in the ISL though the peak of his career primarily coincided with the I-League. He was a part of Mumbai City FC, NorthEast United FC, Jamshedpur FC, Hyderabad FC, along with loan stints at East Bengal FC and Mohun Bagan too.
7. Laxmikant Kattimani – 19 clean sheets

8. Prabsukhan Singh Gill – 18 clean sheets

Prabsukhan Singh Gill, 23, is one of the rising stars of Indian football, who has a lot of eyes on him arguably due to his striking similarity with Sandhu. He is presently playing for East Bengal FC and has maintained 18 clean sheets in 62 appearances so far.
9. Phurba Lachenpa – 18 clean sheets

Phurba Lachenpa has kept 18 clean sheets in 50 matches, demonstrating remarkable consistency and reliability between the posts. He has been a vital cog of Mumbai City FC’s title-winning brigade in the last couple of seasons.
10. Mohammad Nawaz – 15 clean sheets

Mohammad Nawaz is one of those names that has fallen out of favour despite being largely touted to have a huge potential. He was an instrumental member of Sergio Lobera’s FC Goa unit, but his performance levels began withering once he left the Gaurs. Currently, he is on a quest to resurrect his career with Chennaiyin FC.
